Get the rockhoppers out!

Get the old skis out and build a kicker? Well, that’s not really my thing, and if it was it’d still be a bit ambitious! As you can see from the photo, it’s been snowing and things are looking a bit more like winter in Tignes. Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to ski yet. The glacier has been closed for the last few days due to high winds, but with more snow forecast for tomorrow, it looks like the Grand Motte is getting a much needed top-up.

It's great here (and that's snow joke)

It’s time to set the record straight about the snow situation in Tignes. I’ve heard a lot of whingers, both tourists and locals alike, who are not just longing for the next dump of powder but are saying it’s bad in Tignes.

It’s not bad in Tignes, it’s bad in Megeve, it’s bad in the Portes du Soleil, it’s bad in Meribel, in fact, you might even say that Val d’Isere is struggling on some of the runs into the resort, but there’s no way you can say it’s bad in Tignes when we must have the best snow in the French Alps at the moment. Before you utter another word about how bad the snow is, try skiing Trolles at 9:15 in the morning and then get back to me. If you can’t ski Trolles yet then I doubt that you really need a foot of fresh powder to cheer you up anyway!

So if you are lucky enough to be in Tignes right now, here’s a five step action plan on how to make the most of the best snow conditions in France at the moment:

1) Get up early, that’s when the runs are in the best condition.

2) Head up high. The snow on the glacier is fantastic right now.

3) If you need to distract yourself from your thirst for powder, why not try learning some new tricks in the snowpark? *

4) The moguls are in great shape at the moment, this could be the week you harness them! *

5) The classic off piste routes are well skied, and the avalanche risk is low. It’s a perfect time to head off piste. *

* If you haven’t tried this before, maybe I can recommend an instructor?

If you’re still not happy, my ski school is running snowshoe excursions 7 days a week, 30€ per session! So stop moaning and get out there!

Christmas Came Early

My friend Tom Christmas must have been a good boy this year, as his early season trip to Tignes was unbelievably good for the first week of December. I put together this video as a reminder of how good the snow was. Please excuse the snowboarding, but I’ve been know to dabble in it from time to time.

I made the video using a free and open source editor for Linux called OpenShot, which is the best I have used so far. If you are interested in trying out OpenShot and Linux you can download a live DVD from and test out this free software without messing up your Windows computer.

Since making the film, we have seen a rise in temperature and a spot of rain in Tignes, which has played havoc with my off-piste skiing schedule, but the pistes have remained soft and are in good condition. I just skied down to Les Breviers and skinned back up and it looks like with a bit of piste-bashing the runs down to bottom will be open soon.

Armed with my video camera, I hope to get plenty more footage from Tignes so watch this space.
